Venus was born in 1980 and Serena was born in 1981. They grew up in Compton, California, and began playing tennis at a young age. Their father, Richard Williams, was a self-taught tennis coach who believed that his daughters could become the best in the world.
Venus and Serena quickly rose through the ranks of junior tennis. Venus won the Wimbledon junior title in 1998 and Serena won it in 1999. They both turned professional in 1999 and quickly began to make a name for themselves on the WTA Tour.

They are the only two players to have won all four Grand Slam doubles titles in the same year (2002 and 2009).
