Vock's journey begins in the United States, where he visits a massive landfill in California that is so large it can be seen from space. He meets with waste industry executives who boast about their profits, and he talks to residents who live near the landfill and suffer from the health effects of pollution.
Vock then travels to China, the world's largest importer of waste. He visits a recycling plant where workers toil in dangerous conditions to sort through the mountains of trash that are shipped in from around the world. He also visits a village where residents have been poisoned by the toxic chemicals that are released by a nearby waste incinerator.
Vock's journey is a powerful indictment of our throwaway culture. He shows us the true cost of our waste, both in terms of human health and environmental damage. He also offers solutions to the problem, including reducing our consumption, recycling more, and composting our organic waste.
A Journey into the Heart of the Trash Trade
Travels in the Billion Dollar Trash Trade is a must-read for anyone who cares about the environment. Vock's writing is clear, concise, and engaging, and he provides a wealth of information about the waste trade. The book is also beautifully illustrated with photographs by Vock himself.
Vock's journey is a powerful reminder that we cannot afford to continue to waste our resources. We must reduce our consumption, recycle more, and compost our organic waste. If we do not, we will continue to pay a high price for our throwaway culture.
