Brown's B-17 Flying Fortress was returning from a bombing raid on Bremen when it was attacked by German fighters. Stigler's Messerschmitt Bf 109 was one of the attackers.

Stigler quickly shot down Brown's plane, but he could see that the American pilot was still alive. Instead of finishing him off, Stigler flew alongside Brown's plane and escorted it out of German airspace.

Stigler's act of chivalry was unprecedented in the war. He could easily have killed Brown, but he chose to spare his life.
